At just 15 years old, Touria Chaoui became the first Moroccan and Arab woman to earn a pilot's license in 1951, breaking barriers in a male-dominated field.
Touria Chaoui was a trailblazer who shattered glass ceilings in the Arab world. Born in Fez in 1936, she developed a passion for aviation at a young age. In 1950, she enrolled in the aviation school in Tit Mellil, near Casablanca, which was then reserved primarily for the French military. Despite facing significant discrimination and skepticism, she persevered. On October 17, 1951, at the age of 15, Touria Chaoui obtained her pilot's license, becoming the first Moroccan woman and the first woman in the Arab world to do so. Her achievement was celebrated across the country and by the Sultan Mohammed V. She became a symbol of the emancipation of Moroccan women and the struggle for independence. Tragically, her life was cut short when she was assassinated on March 1, 1956, just one day before Morocco's independence, at the age of 19. Despite her short life, her legacy as a pioneer for women's rights and aviation in Morocco endures, inspiring generations of young women to pursue their dreams regardless of societal expectations.
