Born in Tangier in 1304, Ibn Battuta traveled over 117,000 kilometers across the known world over 30 years, more than any explorer before the age of steam.
Ibn Battuta (1304-1368/1369), born in Tangier, Morocco, is one of the greatest travelers in human history. Over the course of 30 years, he journeyed approximately 117,000 kilometers—more than Marco Polo and Zheng He combined—visiting 44 modern countries. **The Journey Begins:** At age 21, Ibn Battuta set out for the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. What began as a religious journey became an odyssey spanning three decades. He traveled across North Africa, the Middle East, East Africa, Central Asia, India, Southeast Asia, and China. **Extraordinary Experiences:** Ibn Battuta served as a judge (qadi) in Delhi for eight years under Sultan Muhammad bin Tughluq. He visited the Maldives, where he also served as a judge, and explored Indonesia and China during the Yuan Dynasty. He survived shipwrecks, diseases, and political intrigues throughout his adventures. **The Rihla:** Upon returning to Morocco, Sultan Abu Inan Faris commissioned a scholar named Ibn Juzayy to record Ibn Battuta's experiences. The result was the "Rihla" (The Journey), one of the most important travel accounts ever written, providing invaluable insights into 14th-century cultures, societies, and geography across three continents. **Legacy:** Ibn Battuta remains a symbol of curiosity, courage, and cultural exchange. Tangier's airport, museums, and streets bear his name, and he is celebrated worldwide as the greatest pre-modern explorer.
