The greatest middle-distance runner in history, El Guerrouj holds unbroken world records in the 1500m and mile that have stood for over 25 years.
Hicham El Guerrouj, born September 14, 1974, in Berkane, Morocco, is widely regarded as the greatest middle-distance runner of all time. His world records in the 1500m (3:26.00) and the mile (3:43.13) have remained unbroken for over 25 years. **Olympic Glory:** At the 2004 Athens Olympics, El Guerrouj achieved what no man had done in 80 years since Paavo Nurmi — winning gold medals in both the 1500m and 5000m events. This historic double came after years of heartbreak, including a devastating fall in the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and a narrow silver in Sydney 2000. **World Championship Dominance:** He won four consecutive 1500m World Championship titles (1997, 1999, 2001, 2003) and three World Indoor titles. He was named IAAF World Athlete of the Year three consecutive times (2001-2003), the first athlete to achieve this feat. **Legacy:** El Guerrouj holds 6 of the 10 fastest 1500m times ever run and 7 of the 15 fastest mile times. After his fall in Atlanta, King Hassan II personally encouraged him to continue, a moment El Guerrouj credits as pivotal to his subsequent success. He was inducted into the IAAF Hall of Fame in 2014.
