Launched in November 2018, Al Boraq is the first high-speed rail line in Africa and the Arab world, connecting Tangier to Casablanca at 320 km/h.
**Al Boraq** is the high-speed rail line that put Morocco — and Africa — on the map of modern rail transport. Operating between **Tangier, Kenitra and Casablanca** since 2018, it is the **first high-speed train in Africa and the Arab world**.
**A Royal and Presidential Inauguration:**
The line was officially inaugurated on **November 15, 2018** by **King Mohammed VI** and French President **Emmanuel Macron**, marking the culmination of a decade of planning and construction by the national operator **ONCF** in partnership with French manufacturer **Alstom**.
**320 km/h Through the Atlantic Plain:**
Al Boraq runs at a commercial speed of **320 km/h** along a brand-new dedicated high-speed line between Tangier and Kenitra, before continuing on upgraded conventional track to Casablanca. The journey from Tangier to Casablanca, which once took **4 hours 45 minutes**, now takes only **2 hours 10 minutes**.
**Avelia Euroduplex Trains:**
The fleet uses **Alstom Avelia Euroduplex** double-decker trainsets specially adapted for Moroccan conditions, capable of carrying more than 500 passengers per train and meeting European safety and signalling standards.
**A Strategic Vision:**
Beyond the headline speed, Al Boraq is part of a broader plan to modernise Moroccan mobility, decongest the Atlantic corridor, and connect the country's economic capital to its key northern logistics hub. Future extensions are planned south toward Marrakech and Agadir.
**Continental Significance:**
By becoming the first African nation with true high-speed rail, Morocco demonstrated that cutting-edge mobility infrastructure is not the exclusive preserve of Europe or East Asia — and set a benchmark for future African rail projects.
